The company was founded by Michael Downing in Perth in 1966, at the time when the first two iron ore projects were being built in the Pilbara. Assignments were quickly won from the owners and contractors of the projects and Downing Teal’s familiarity with the construction and operations of resources projects commenced. To assist with the resourcing of candidates, offices were opened in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth and the company became one of the few national recruitment consultancies.
From the early days, we saw ourselves as being different to other recruitment consultancies. We grew to understand how our client industries operated and we gained excellent practical knowledge, which enabled us to source the right candidates. Downing Teal’s internal recruitment policy became, and still is, to recruit consultants from our industry client base. It was important to understand how the industries functioned and what their management and technical professionals needed to be successful. We wanted our clients to eagerly expect receiving our short-lists because there would be relevant candidates, fit for purpose.
We learnt that the construction industry was more than just technical skills. We learnt that, on major projects, there were multiple interests at work and various forms of contracts upon which delivery was important, there was a different focus required, dependent upon whether the client was a project owner, an EPC/M provider, a consulting engineer, or a contractor. So we designed our database and systems to accommodate those things.
In 1988, management and staff bought out Michael Downing. The company was owned by its employees, and still is! Downing Teal is one of the largest employee owned recruitment consultancies.
At the turn of the century, international offices were opened and Alliances formed.
Downing Teal is now an international company with offices in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Gladstone, the Pilbara, Santiago, Lima and Sao Paulo. We have Alliances in Toronto and Johannesburg.
Through DT Executive, we conduct Executive Searches for board appointments, the C-Suite and senior managers. Interim Management is also provided at a senior level.
DT Professional recruits permanent and contract employees from graduate level though to senior professionals up to management level.
DT Workforce provides permanent employees from Operators, through to the trades and supervisory levels and has a thriving contract labour division.
As a group, Downing Teal has experience in providing all personnel for major Resources and Construction projects. Not only do we recruit on a position by position basis, we have many examples recruiting hundreds of people to staff resources or construction projects.
